Tunupa Volcano and Andean Heritage

Rising to an impressive 5,321 meters, the majestic Tunupa Volcano dominates the landscape with its ochre and reddish slopes. Revered by local communities as a sacred female deity who gave birth to the salt flats, Tunupa is much more than a geological wonder: it is a place of myth, awe, and deep connection to the Earth.

The journey begins with a 4×4 crossing of the vast salt flats towards the village of Coquesa. From there, a winding mountain road leads visitors to the crater base at 4,600 meters above sea level. As the vehicle ascends through rocky fields and rugged terrain, the salt flats unfold below in a breathtaking panorama.

A short hike reaches the first ridge at 4,900 meters. Though the altitude is challenging, the reward is a dazzling viewpoint surrounded by vibrant, multicolored landscapes. For those seeking more adventure, continuing along the wind-swept ridge offers an unforgettable experience. The ascent to the caldera’s edge reveals a 360° view and a rare glimpse into the volcano’s heart.

Lunch is served in a peaceful spot beside a traditional stone house, with infinite views of the salt flats. In this tranquil setting, a comforting meal is enjoyed: fresh salads, quinoa, homemade dishes, and a glass of wine, thoughtfully prepared to nourish both body and soul.
